A Word from Nikki
We Are Proud Supporters of Breast Cancer Awareness at Nikki Froud Hairdressing Salon in Lee-On-The-Solent, Hampshire
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a worldwide annual campaign involving thousands of organisations, to highlight the importance of breast awareness, education and research.
We are proud supporters of this campaign at our hair salon in Lee-On-The-Solent, Hampshire. We will be participating in ‘Wear it Pink’ day on Friday 14th October, with the team dressing up in pink and selling delicious cupcakes with donations going to charity.
Salon Owner, Nikki, is a survivor of Cancer herself. Here, she bravely shares her story.
Nikki’s Journey…
Well I have been there, done it and got the T Shirt so to speak and although people tend to feel sorry for you I can honestly say that I am proud to be a survivor! It seems very hard to write about cancer in any form, but it really does touch all of our lives at some point.
And, when we reach that point it is normal to feel sad and sorry for your friend, work colleague, next door neighbour, family member or even the little child in the local school but we also have a sense of guilt because we are relieved that it is not you or one of your direct family and that is OK, because we are human and that is a normal feeling.
I along with the other three Cancer Musketeers in my life, Avril, Debbie and Eira – have laughed, encouraged, supported and cried together on our Cancer journeys and believe me you can be in a room full of people and still feel totally alone!
When you survive something like this it makes you a different person, you have a sense of pride and strength that keeps you going daily, a sniff or cold becomes a trivial excuse, a broken leg can be mended, a cut can be healed but for Cancer survivors it is an ongoing battle as, although Chemo makes all the difference as the weapon to protect you from a near fatal end, it too brings other complications that you stand up against everyday but we are survivors, so bring it on, we can stand up to anything!
Whether we lose our hair, have no eyebrows or eyelashes, have massive changes to the curves in our bodies and have to wear life changing bras, we live for today as it is the best feeling in the world, to be alive!
As a hairdresser or beautician we see so much with Cancer and we are the ones that;
- Encourage you to shave your hair off, knowing that it is just about to fall out, hopefully taking away some of that dreaded pain.
- Watch you become sad as that beautiful colour has now completely gone and the scalp that is so sore with faint memories of what you once had is to sensitive too touch.
- But then we watch you fight back by wearing those wigs that we have cut and styled to suit your changing features, encouraging you to be brave with outrageous colours and new trends.
Your eyelashes and brows maybe now false but they are perfect with length and colour, showcasing your beautiful eyes. We watch, we wait, we care, we encourage and then we start by helping to rebuild your new forever look in front of the salon mirror that for the last year you have avoided looking in.
I love my job and I am a survivor and I will do everything that I possibly can to support anyone with Cancer and these are now my values that I live by everyday.
I have learned that;
- No matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.
- Making a ‘living’ is not the same thing as ‘making a life.
- Life sometimes gives you a second chance, as it has for me.
- Whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision.
- Even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one.
I still have a lot to learn. Every day is a great day and it is great to be alive But most importantly – I have learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.
